I really appreciated your piece, especially the part where you got in the car and drove away. I also have no relationship with my parents. I have a brother, but since he still keeps in touch with them, I see him rarely and we don’t have a very deep bond. It took me many years to become independent enough to cut ties, and as you said, it’s not easy. I found myself completely on my own, but every day I give myself credit for how I managed to pull myself out of certain situations, and I’ve become much more compassionate toward myself.
I don't *really* talk to my parents or my little sister. The first set were a bit of absentee parents. Little sis I have to hold at a distance and limit contact because...she's a lot (in the mental health kinda way). It's what works for me and I kind of knew since sixth grade that I wanted to move far away from my sh*t town. And I got what I wanted, but not without a lot of pain.
Your writing inspires me to write. I just gotta figure out what. I have a big thing on my mind, but I don't want to risk making the situation worse by sharing publicly.
Thank you for reading and commenting. As you already know, I think you’re an incredible writer and I get the need to discern what to share publicly. I’ve tiptoed around essays like this for many years, finally deciding that it was time to get out of my own way. My own adoptive mother was worried a few years ago, when I shared a brief version of this story on a public facing FB page. We discussed it and she realized she was concerned for the younger version of me, not the grown up of today that would easily end the life of anyone who tries to hurt her 💕

Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing. 💜
